Earth Day...Noble idea or Nazi like scourge?

I need help understanding something.

Today is earth day. On both Twitter and Facebook I have seen many friends of mine trashing the day and the thought behind it (pun intended).

Declarations to burn down trees, leave the water running, leave the electricity on all night, to pour tar into recycling dumpsters...the list goes on and on. It has the feel of an angry mob.

I don't get it. Why the unbridled hatred and malice for an idea that has quite a bit of merit? What could be more important for a generation than doing what they can to ensure an Earth cleaner and healthier for future generations than the one they were given?

What is it about the idea that makes people so bitter and angry? So willing to declare, either jokingly or for real, that they would rather participate in harmful activities than take a day to acknowledge that we only get ONE earth...and we can't trade this one in when it breaks.

I do not want to start a flame war. I am honestly baffled by this. This is a serious request for honest and respectful dialogue.

Anyone care to shed some light on the subject?

  1. There are some people who think everything the Liberals in this country ttry to do is wrong. I think that is why you are seeing Earth Day being bashed. I mean if I remember corectly this was started by a bunch of people humming on a rock. I think we should take care of our enviroment. It does show honor to our Creator.

  2. While I still have not come to a definitive conclusion re: global warming and such, I do believe we should respect the gift God has given us and care for the world in which we live. This issue has become more political than practical which, in my opinion, why it is such a "hot topic", no pun intended ;-).

  3. I'll go with Nazi like scourge, though that may be a bit unfair to Nazis.

  4. @Bob...yes...some people see liberal=tree hugging wacko...just as there are liberals who see conservative=bible thumping illiterate...is is so hard for people to see there are positives on BOTH sides...I don't get it

@Erica (I want some tiramasu)...I am not even talking about global warming. What you said about caring for the earth we have been given is my whole point.

    @Matt...how so?

  5. If liberals and other environmental wackos wouldn't be so ridiculous in their attempts to get people to 'go green', you'd probably see more people wanting to give it a try. Give people practical ideas, stop politicizing taking care of the earth, and stop lying about the horrific effects of "global warming'. Maybe we'd listen then!

  6. @Karrie...ridiculous how? It seems like you are politicizing this just as much as they are by using terms like 'wacko'.

Isn't it kind of a politicizing things by saying "We would listen as long as it wasn't liberals or wackos saying it?"

I have seen plenty of practical ideas...what do you mean?... Read More

the science on global warning is too new for either side to use effectively. BOTH sides have politicized that too much as well.

  7. @Brian I see this everyday at my job. People are so sure that they are right that they will not listen to anything else (including logic and common sense). Sometimes stubborness and stupidity goes hand in hand.

  8. I hadn't read your post yet when I answered "scourge." I still believe that for the most part, but wasn't aware of any people threatening vandalism of private property or burning down trees(which could easily spread and become a danger to many people if not handled properly) in response to Earth Day. Those I certainly don't agree with.

Concerning the electricity, though -- for Earth Hour, there was a corresponding Anti-Earth Hour, in which people turned on all of their lights for the duration of the hour. Earth Hour produces no benefit, increases danger for people traveling through major metropolitan areas that are unlit during that hour, and can put unnecessary strain on power grids at the end of the hour when power is turned on by so many people at the same time.

I certainly believe in limiting waste and recycling, but believe that many additional practices put forth by some of the more vocal Earth Hour/Day proponents are unhelpful at best(and in some cases even harmful). The wacky proponents do more harm than good, and even when they do have a good idea it's hard to take them seriously because of their hideous track record. That's genetic fallacy, I know, but what do they expect people's reaction to be when they've done the environmental equivalent of crying wolf so many times before?

Tiramisu is long gone ... not sure it would withstand shipment to you anyway ... you'll need to make a trip to Oregon, sorry ;-D

  10. @Little Shepherd...

I don't think the tree comment was made seriously. You and I both know the dude who made it and I am sure he was just kidding.

I just know many conservatives who come off as arrogant and anti environment, whether they mean to be or not.

That needs to change if they expect to ever be taken seriously by anyone who doesn't already see the world the way they see it.

  12. @Don...there is truth to that, no doubt.

But does that negate the truth that is prostituted?

BTW...you made me think of Miss Williamson and her Johann Tetzel impersonation...if I have weird dreams now I curse you...

  13. Wow, you aren't goofing around, you are really considering the merits of the Environmental Movement, aren't you?
In short, I'll just say that this movement to "Save the Earth" is merely a disguised anti- American movement designed to distribute money and influence away from the United States and toward other nations.
There is plenty of empirical ... Read Moreevidence to back this up, but has anyone actually read the text of the Kyoto Accord? Read it. You will find that while plenty of restrictions are imposed on the U.S., India and China would be permitted to pollute at will. Kyoto would have netted zero gain for the environment, yet the Eco-Freaks touted it. One instance of proof of my point

  14. At some point a truth is prostituted to an extent to which is is no longer valuable or worthy of respect. I will be the first to admit that I have a beef with the fringe, but unfortunately in the name of "good intentions" that fringe has significant power and influence, particularly over our children. The scientific (and faux-scientific... I'm ... I don't believe anyone (except maybe Matt) is willfully anti-environment. That's the worst part of it. The bar must keep moving to ensure that all are guilty sinners else the cause will not go on!

All we can hope for is that the environmentalists go after Hollywood and academia. That way the GORE ERA will become one of America's "Great Tragedies" a la McCarthy and we'll be treated to two movies and three documentaries a year about how evil evil EVIL! the over-zealous do-gooders were!

  15. There was a movement in the mid-90s that sadly got buried. Its called 'Wise Use' I'm sure you can find it on a Google search.
If there needs to be any 'Movement' its this one. 100% common sense.

  20. I think conservatives get so tired of hearing from liberals what we should and shouldn't do and then seeing them do the opposite...I think it makes conservatives want to completely ignore any suggestion of 'going green.' I don't think the majority of conservatives are against an effort to take care of the environment at all. I think we are tired ... I agree with Matt...most of these 'movements' are meant to weaken America and give more power to our enemies...like the Kyoto Agreement...you need to read it Brian...I'm all for independence of foreign oil as long as it doesn't mean gas goes up to $10/gallon and we are all forced to drive mini eco cars.

And I'm tired of celebrities thinking they should speak at all that what they say matters just b/c they are over paid actors/actresses, and that we even care!!

  21. The source material for the movie "The Day After Tomorrow" is a book called "The Coming Global Superstorm". I don't have a problem taking care of the environment and the earth. I have a problem with wrecking the economy on ideas that very well might cause more harm.

  26. the moral of your question brian is that we are tired of being told what to do, how to do it, when to do it and that we aren't doing it right, and what horrible people we conservatives are.

It's not anger at 'Earth Day', it's anger at the people trying to shove it down our throats w/out taking their own advice.

  27. That's why I posted the question Matt...I love the discussion...still haven't gotten an opinion from my liberal friends...where are you guys???????????

  28. Sorry Bri - not a liberal...
I was reading a magazine about going green & one article mentioned that even if you changed a few things...it makes a difference.

Par example' my community does not recycle. This mystifies me since recycling cuts down on the amount of trashbags on the sidewalk & in the dumps. So I started setting aside my aluminum, plastic, & boxes to take to my parents who have recycling. I have gone from 3-4 trashbags a week to 1-2.

washing laundry with cold water when able cuts down on energy.

I have tried some of the "green" cleansers. I may need to use a bit more elbow grease when cleaning but at least my eyes aren't burning or my breathing isn't affected!

SO I don't mind doing what I can to reduce my "carbon footprint"

Not to mention I have found that instead of using Raid to kill ants - some of the "green" cleansers kill them too! Hmmm - now how green can that be if it kills ants?
