Earth Day...Noble idea or Nazi like scourge?

I need help understanding something.

Today is earth day. On both Twitter and Facebook I have seen many friends of mine trashing the day and the thought behind it (pun intended).

Declarations to burn down trees, leave the water running, leave the electricity on all night, to pour tar into recycling dumpsters...the list goes on and on. It has the feel of an angry mob.

I don't get it. Why the unbridled hatred and malice for an idea that has quite a bit of merit? What could be more important for a generation than doing what they can to ensure an Earth cleaner and healthier for future generations than the one they were given?

What is it about the idea that makes people so bitter and angry? So willing to declare, either jokingly or for real, that they would rather participate in harmful activities than take a day to acknowledge that we only get ONE earth...and we can't trade this one in when it breaks.

I do not want to start a flame war. I am honestly baffled by this. This is a serious request for honest and respectful dialogue.

Anyone care to shed some light on the subject?

Friday Top Ten 4/10-4/17

There was a lot of zombie talk last week. I hope I didn't chase any of my six readers away with my talk of the flesh consuming undead.

Or perhaps it was the sharing of a site that encourages torture of marshmallow candy for the amusement of people with questionable moral character.

Or perhaps it was Easter week and people were just busy.

Whatever the reason my zombie question (If you could choose any classic movie or book to spice up with the introduction of a zombie infestation, what would it be and why) only garnered three responses. But they were three great responses and I am having considerable difficulty choosing a winner. The entries were...

1. Gone With the Wind by Last Call Again

2. The Breakfast Club by Faith

3. The Sound of Music by Life on the Edges.

Help me figure this one out. Zombies would make a wonderful addition to any of these choices. I have my favorite but if you cold please click the COMMENT link and throw in your two cents...or two severed appendages as the case may be...on which choice should win the big prize, I would be eternally grateful. I will also still take entries up until Sunday.

Onto this week's list.

10. Twitter!

Twitter has been in the news all week. I enjoyed watching the Kutcher vs . CNN race. It was silly fun that also raised thousands of dollars for a very worthy cause.

I love Twitter.

Have been a tweeting member since April 10, 2007. Find out why I am a TWIT(ter). If you have been hearing all about Twitter and want to know what it is all about, go check it out...jump in!

If you are an old pro at Twitter and want to remember what your first insightful tweet was all about, jump over to MyFirstTweet.com. Want to know my first pearl of wisdom?

On April 10, 2007, at 3:38 pm, I unleashed this metaphysical scripture...

"Sitting at the computer."

Little did Twitter know at the time...its sage muse had arrived.

If you are not on Twitter now...you should be.

9. I am glad someone finally told the Eagles they are ALLOWED to make moves in the offseason, aside from not picking up the contract of the most loved player on the team and possibly in the history of the franchise and firing disabled employees for flexing their first amendment rights.

I LOVE the pick up of Jason Peters. The guy is a beast who will definitely have McNabb's left side covered. In fact, if we can keep Shawn Andrews off of Zoloft, the O line is looking GOOD. The fact that we still get to pick 21st is icing.

Might we have a sustained running game this year? Dare I think it?

8. Let me throw some numbers at you.

5.54, 6.55, 9.00, 10.38, 11.17

Those numbers represent the ERA for Myers, Moyer, Blanton, Ho Park, and Hamels respectively.

There is no doubt...this has been a very tough week for the team with the passing of HK (see #1).

But I don't know how much longer I can wait for the starting pitching to wake up!

The Phillies were up 7 to 1 tonight before Cole began hemorrhaging faster than my 401K. The bats are what is keeping me from throwing myself off the Benjamin Franklin bridge...but after tonight I may have to wait in line.

7. So apparently the argument it's not what you know but who you know is alive and well today. A friend sent me this article about a memorial that is being funded to honor the memory and legacy of Martin Luther King. Intellectual Properties Management Inc., King's family, was paid $761,160.00 for the use of his words.

$761,160.00

I don't know what MLK would say about this, but I find it hard to believe it would be anything positive. How do you justify that much money in a single year?

6. Welcome home Richard Phillips!

All's well that ends well...except for those three ventilated pirates.

5. For the male portion of my six readers I offer BadAssoftheweek.com (profanity warning...quite a bit of it). Yes, it is EXACTLY what it sounds like.

You have to read about this week's BadAss, Ben Nyaumbe.

I don't even feel worthy to type this dude's name.

4. As if the world needed another reason to mock Yankee fans.

Well...I am always looking for a good one so with that in mind I offer this link to a short video.

You go watch. I'll wait here.

I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

My favorite quote:

"Pepsi used this as a platform to promote their product (well...DUH...isn't that why it's called a promotion), and humiliate the Yankee fans (don't think you need Pepsi's help with that one sweetheart)."

So the Bleacher Bums make an asinine mistake, then blame Pepsi and litter in the streets to prove their point.

I think I am gonna go watch it again...

3. A cool site I pulled off Twitter this week. Sorry, forget who put it out there so I can't credit the tweet.

Twenty lashes for me with the Twitter Cat-o-nine tails.

The Mother of all Lists is...the mother of all lists.

I really had to include it for this entry in the 'Entertainment List'...

Eight Albums I Have Owned That I Should Be Embarrassed About, But, Whatever, Life’s Too Short.

I have actually owned tow of those eight at some point in my life. If you want to guess, take it to the comments section.

2. I had a section all sorted out to talk about Allen Iverson but I ran out of the desire to care. Why kick a man when he is down...wayyyyy down.

So, instead, how about the latest, totally amazing, would be Filet Mignon if it were a food, Half Blood Prince trailer?

ENJOY

1. Harry the K.

Tomorrow the Phillies will honor the life and memory of their voice for the past almost 40 years, Harry Kalas.

My tribute here.

Rest in peace Harry.

There will never be another like you.

That's the list for this past week. I would love to debate any of it...just bring your thoughts to the COMMENT section, right at the end of this post.

If you are looking for the weekend questions I have decided to change the format a bit.

Instead of a weekend question, I think I am going to go with a weekly one. I will unveil the question on a Monday and pick the winner on a Friday.

I will pick the winner of last week's question (hopefully with some valuable assistance) on Sunday.

Have a good weekend everyone! Watch out for the zombies...

Godspeed, Harry the K

It is cliche at times like this to say that life is uncertain and that it turns on a dime...but many cliches become so designated because they are true.

I, like many of the Phillies Phaithful, watched Matt Stairs crush that pitch last night into the visiting team's bullpen to give the Phills a two run lead. I whooped and hollered as the voice of springs and summers without number serenaded the ball with the immortal call as it soared over that Colorado fence. Had I know it would be the last time I would hear that call live, the rich bass elevated to a higher level in direct proportion to the flight of the ball, I would have paused.

No motion, no movement.

Just that wonderful voice in my ears, lifting my spirits as high as the baseball that soared gracefully out of the field of play and into the pen.

But I was not to know. None of us were to know.

This morning life went on as usual. Eagerly looking forward to an early game at three I began to work on a list of things I wanted to get done before the first pitch. Then, some time after one in the afternoon...life did its dime trick.

Over the Twitter wire...

'Harry Hospitalized [Updated]: Via John Finger's Twitter feed, Harry Kalas was just rushed to George Washington H.. http://bit.ly/11TqDC'

I dropped my partially eaten sandwich back onto its plate and started jumping from site to site, offering up fervent prayers for Harry and his family. All sites reporting collapse, rush to hospital, prognosis...not good.

About twenty minutes later the Twitter wire beeped again...

'RT @tzolecki: Tragic news. Harry Kalas has died.'

And just like that my life as a fan of the Phiadelphia Phillies was forever changed.

Life...turning on a dime.

I was shocked at the depth of sadness I felt for a man I had never met. I sat in front of my laptop, my to do list sitting forgotten on the floor where it had fallen and watched as first Twitter, then Facebook, then sites all over the Internet began to fill with that peculiar mix of anguish and fond memory that can only come with the passing of one that is held so dear. Local television stations reported the tragic news as it broke. Thousands of people, sharing my reaction, sharing our collective loss and remembering the life of a true legend.

Harry Kalas WAS the Phillies. Someone on one of the local news broadcasts said that players come on go...but Harry Kalas was a constant, a perennial fan favorite. Harry was always there for us.

When the team was doing well his enthusiasm was contagious. I think we all have our favorite Harry calls when his voice, the joy of victory personified, transported us right into the heart of the game. Every momentous Phillies moment I can remember was always elevated to a higher level when it was called by Harry the K.

When the Phills weren't doing so well Harry was never one to sugar coat it. When a Phillies fielder would make a perplexing decision or a Phillies pitcher would offer up a pitch to a batter that everyone in the civilized world knew was going to result in a massive home run, Harry let us know...but he did it with class. He did it with the hope that tomorrow, things would turn around. Harry helped me stay with the team in their truly atrocious years simply for that reason. No matter how bad it got, Harry always left me feeling like TOMORROW was the day. The guys would turn it around tomorrow.

Harry taught me to have 'high hopes'.

Thank you Harry.

Thank you for your love of baseball and for sharing it with us so well.

Thank you for 'Michael Jack' and 'That ball is OUTTA HERE!"

Thank you for showing us that celebrity and humility CAN go well together.

Thank you for the memories.

We will never forget you.

Friday Top Ten, ZOMBIES, and a TWOfer Weekend Question

Deepest of deep apologies to my six readers for abandoning the Friday Top Ten last week. The Sprout's grandmother stole her away on Friday afternoon so the wife and I found ourselves ALONE on a Friday night and you KNOW what that means...

...asleep in bed by nine sharp.

Saturday was NCAA tourney time and Sunday was Opening Night for baseball. So as you can see, between zombie like sleep, intense basketball, and the Chinese Water Torture that is Phillies baseball in April...there was no blogging.

Please forward all complaints to management.

You'll have to speak up...I'm a trifle deaf in this ear.

Onto this week's list...

10. 100 Ways to Kill a Peep. For morbid creativity, and let's face it, that's the best kind, this blog gets a 10! My favorite has to be the peep who overdosed on smarties. The Easter candy aisle will never be the same...

9. If you happen to be of the law breaking persuasion, do not move to Tampa or your attractive mug could wind up here. I love how the disclaimer states that the discerning web surfer (or possible future employer) who happens upon their site should "...not rely on this site to determine any person's actual criminal record." Because guilty until proven innocent is the FIRST THING I thought of as I looked at those pictures...

I am not sure if I agree with this practice or not. Any thoughts are encouraged to be shared in the COMMENTS section.

8. Congratulations UNC! Out of four brackets that I completed this year, I took home top prize in TWO and placed second in a third. I have to personally thank Missouri, Villanova, and of course the national champs for helping me smack down so many close friends and co workers.

Brett...where is my cash prize?!?

7. Apparently Captain Jack Sparrow is alive and well and causing a ruckus with automatic weapons off the coast of Somalia.

Pirates?!?

The only thing I expect to read about piracy these days involves China and American movies...not real life pirates sailing the seven seas like high tech Blackbeards.

Making mental note to skip the Somali Parasailing Olympics this year...

6. Karl Rove and Vice President Biden were sniping at each other this week. Or rather I should say Biden was being Biden (come on...we all know he is the fisherman in the group who always talks about the fish he caught that was 'THIS BIG') and Karl Rove (honestly...why do people even care what this guy thinks anymore) was stating the obvious with the bitterness of a fifteen year old girl who didn't get a date for the Spring Dance.

In interviews next week expect to see the exchange of 'your momma' jokes followed up with eye poking and cream pie throwing.

5. So Obama has hired Kumar. I am not sure what the 'White House Office of Public Liaison' is exactly, but Kumar has laid aside his acting clothes for some political ones. Hey don't get me wrong, I love the fact that we live in a country where we can be actively involved in politics as much or as little as we choose. Kumar (Kal Penn) felt this was an important thing to do and I respect the man's civic mindedness for walking away from all that money to serve his government full time.

But part of me has to wonder if the suicide his character commits on the television show HOUSE is also a metaphor for the rest of his acting career...

4. Baseball season has started. The Phillies have kicked off their World Series title defense in much the same way they kick off every season...getting scored on more times than a blind ice hockey goalie.

I know...I know...I should be used to it.

I know...I know...its a LONG season and we are only four games in.

I know...I know...We always battle back.

All of this I know. But watching Cole Hamels get roughed up like Tony Romo in any game played in the month of December hurts.

Would somebody PLEASE make May get here...FAST?!?

3. Why has no other celebrity ever thought to use this defense when hounded by the mindless paparazzo and their instruments of torture?

I love zombies as much as the next guy.

I am currently reading Breathers, a zombie love story. (Finally...a book that answers the question...exactly what part of a person should I serve to my Zombie girlfriend on our first date and what wine should we have with the meal)

I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. (Finally...an Elizabeth I can get on board with)

Zombies are the new Vampires. I get that. (Finally...undead that are not as brooding and sexually confused as Anne Rice's...and not as Emo and mind staggeringly DULL as Stephenie Myer's)

But Woody...seriously...what zombies do you know that can operate a telephoto lens?

2. Wow. Divorce by text. What do you think that one looked like?

HEY WF. BN THINKIN. SUX I KNW BUT MRRGE IZ OUTTY.

I DVRC U.

I DVRC U.

I DVRC U.

LOLZ. I KNOW U THINK IM ROFLING.

TOTLLY SERUS.

TTYL XWIFE

(LOL)

Not a big market for divorce lawyers in Saudi Arabia I guess...

1. Want to rent Bill Clinton for a day? Come on...help Hillary with her massive presidential campaign debt and get a fun filled NYC adventure with the man HIMSELF.

I don't think I need to comment any more. Some things just write themselves.

Except to say what do you think the odds are that Bill is hoping for veto rights over any winner that is not a 20-40 year old woman with loose morals?

WEEKEND QUESTION - A TWOFER!!

I had two really good candidates for the weekend question and couldn't decide on a winner so I decided to post both. Feel free to answer one or both in the COMMENTS section below. SInce this is Easter weekend I will be extending the contest for the amazing prizes until Monday at 5.

1. What classic movie or novel would you like to see livened up by the introduction of a zombie infestation into the plot? Why?

2. If you were to be the lucky winner of the date with Bill Clinton...what would YOU do?

If you get any joy from my silly little blog, please share with others using the ADD THIS or TWEET THIS button below. My self worth as a male is tied directly to the number of hits the blog gets. Yeah...I know...it is sad, pathetic, and weak...but such is life with me.

The MLB Network

If you are a fan of baseball and you are not watching the MLB network right now...I have no idea why not.

I am sitting here at the laptop watching a break in of the Seattle/Minnesota game. So far, in the past 25 minutes I have watched the end of the Yankees second loss in a row (love it). I have watched Longoria crush the ball at Fenway to put the Rays up 6-1 on the Sox. Sadly I watched the Mets go up by 4 on the reds. Now I just saw the Reds start to climb back. (It is now a 9-7 game...GO REDS)

I love this channel...its like having a season ticket at every ballpark for the most important parts of the games. They can cut right in and will stay with any game in a close situation...IN GLORIOUS HD!

(Astros closing in on the Cubs)

(WTH is up with the Padres hideously ugly camo uniforms?)

The MLB Network is FAR SUPERIOR to the NFL Network. The on air talent is FAR better (the fact that there is no Deon to contend with gives the MLBN a 1,000 point bounce). The presentation is better. The original programming is better. In my mid, it's not even a close competition.

I have been watching MLB Network regularly since New Years Day. If you love baseball and you have access...you really should be as well.

On a side note...the Phills got the rings today. Pat Burrell got the largest ovation of the entire ceremony, which was very cool, as Pat Gillick cried like an old, wrinkly ten year old girl. In the long run Ibanez will help us out more I think...but I will miss old Pat the Bat. It was good to see the team together one more time.

Good finish to the game as well. Yes, we have to thank the Braves bullpen somewhat for it...but the hitters did their job...especially Ibanez. Let's hope for a better April to come.

Bring on dem Rockies!

Any debate? Let's take it to the comments section.

Phillies Opening Night...on national TV...

Here is a great pic I took of the game tonight...

Rollins....1 for 4
Werth......1 for 4
Utley......0 for 3
Howrad.....0 for 4
Ibanez.....0 for 4
Victorino..0 for 3
Feliz......0 for 3
Ruiz.......1 for 3
Myers...... For the first two innings forgot he was NOT supposed to be pitching batting practice.

Good late inning rally...until Gonzalez DESTROYED Ryan Howard with a 3-2 FASTBALL.

A great start to a title defense, this effort was not. Just watched Charlie blaming the loss on all the pregame celebrations...I don't buy it.

It is only one game...and it is Phillies tradition to lay stinky turds on the opening day game...but after months of anticipation...this was a king size turd supreme.

Gonna take a day tomorrow to wash the taste out of my mouth...gotta count on Old Faithful to turn us around on Tuesday.

Where The Wild Things Are...

I had read they were making the book into a movie...and here is the trailer...

This is a must see for me. It is one of the earliest stories I can remember. Who among us hasn't at one point in our life wanted to be Max? And not just as kids either...

I love the song that they put with the trailer. Hope it will be in the soundtrack.

Anyone opinions?
