Who is the Chalkboard Dad?

Hey there.

Welcome to Dad at the Chalkboard, my own little padded cell in the greater institution known as the Internet.

I am a husband to a stunning woman who one day totally lost control of her good sense and consented to marry me. Seven years later I still can't figure out why, but that's ok. She took a chance, kissed a frog, and my life was forever changed for the better. Together we have created the most unique little personality on the planet. "The Peanut" as I call her here, is a true original. She is smarter than me, funnier than me, and she inspires me everyday to try to be the kind of man she needs me to be. She is the central character in many of the stories and wanderings on here, so if you stick around you will see exactly what I mean.

I spend my Monday to Fridays in the company of twenty-five or so (give or take, depending on the year) fifth grade students for seven hours each day. It is my joy and privilege (MOST days) to educate them in the finer points of reading, writing, history, and the importance of total, PHanatical devotion to Philly sports. I have been at this job for thirteen years, long enough that my first year students are now legal drinkers who are starting their own careers (and yes, damn it, that makes me feel OLD). I still get a real rush out of it. I wouldn't trade all the great experiences I have had, and all the relationships I have been a part of for anything. I am one of those lucky few that can honestly say he enjoys what he does for a living.

I divide my limited free time up into a few different activities. I love to read and, even more so, love to write. I started this blog a few years ago as a fun way to scratch my writing itch. I have always enjoyed the medium of the written word as a form of expression. Lately some very exciting things have been coming my way as a result. I would love for writing to evolve from the status of "hobby" to "second career" some day. Time will tell. When I am not pounding away at the keys, I am reclining somewhere with a book (or my Kindle) in my hands. When I am not reading or writing I love to spend my time Geocaching (and I write about it here).

Thanks for stopping by the blog. It is my hope that if you like what you see here that you will tell a friend. Or fifty, I'm not picky. And like any writer, I crave, in a sad, demented way, lots of feedback. So drop me a note in the comments section below, tell me what you think. About anything really, I'm not picky.

Hope to see you around here a lot.

Brian
